Three years ago when I started Hobson Builds Co. I found that I was spending endless hours behind a computer screen absorbing new technology which I think is mandatory for anyone starting their own business, I was developing a system and a workflow to get things done. Because building websites is a craft that requires dedication and countless hours until your head begins to spin right!? Then it happened, I bought a skateboard and everything changed.
I’m not your typical skateboarder and I certainly don’t do tricks like the 18 year olds I see at Vancouver’s skatepark The Plaza, but when I need perspective I go down there and I skate. And by adding this to my workday I turn on the tap for new ideas. Riding around and attempting new tricks helps me find solutions to problems instead of staring into the digital abyss waiting for my body to hunch into rigour mortis.
The best part of all is that my clients benefit from me leaving the desk, so while I’m attempting a nose-ollie or riding vert, I’m also finding solutions and ideas for their business. No disrespect to those who spend their entire day behind a computer, it’s just that I’d rather spend part of mine on four wheels – and not the four wheels of a Herman Miller chair if you know what I mean. Even if I am the oldest kid at the skatepark. So what.
